Debuting under Artistic Director Alexi
Zubiría, the
distinguished former member of San Francisco Ballet whose path to
eminence began in his native Venezuela, Western Ballet Company presents
"Danzon" on July 23, 2010, at the Mountain View Center for the
Performing Arts. Western Ballet's "Danzon" is classical ballet at its
best, danced to the stirring rhythms, expressive style, and captivating
energy of musical classics from Zubiría's heritage. Famous
orchestral pieces by Latin American composers, such as Teresa
Carreño (Venezuela), Arturo Marquez (Mexico) and Astor Piazzolla
(Argentina), form a passionate backdrop to ballet choreographed by
Latin Americans, including the renowned Venezuelan Vicente Nebrada
(“Fiebre,” staged by Western Ballet's David Fonnegra); the acclaimed
dancer, director
and choreographer Yanis
Pikieris, who originates from Venezuela (“Not a Tango”); and dancer,
choreographer and director Zubiría himself, who spent his
formative years in Colombia and Venezuela (“Teresita” and "Danzon").
